Narva–Ivangorod Border Crossing 2026: New Hours from 15 June, Summer Queues and How to Get to St Petersburg

If you're planning to travel from Estonia to Russia this summer, this guide will help you prepare and avoid some nasty surprises. In 2026, the operating hours of all Estonian-Russian border crossings have changed. The most significant change came into effect on 15 June 2026 and affects the busiest crossing of all — Narva–Ivangorod.

On top of that, it's summer. School holidays and the annual rush of travellers mean the border sees its heaviest traffic of the year: families visiting relatives, grandparents bringing grandchildren to Russia, people reuniting with loved ones after months apart. Knowing the current crossing schedules and planning your route in advance has never been more important.

CURRENT BORDER CROSSING HOURS IN 2026

From 24 February 2026, Estonia moved all its border crossings with Russia to a twelve-hour operating day. Here is what is currently in place:

Narva – Ivangorod (E20 highway, main crossing)

Open: 07:00 – 19:00.

Change effective: 15 June 2026 (previously open until 23:00).

This is the busiest crossing on the Estonian-Russian border. In summer, significant queues build up — particularly in the afternoon. We strongly recommend crossing in the morning and arriving well ahead of schedule.

Koidula – Kunintsina Gora (alternative crossing, via Pskov)

Open: 07:00 – 19:00.

Change effective: 24 February 2026 (previously 24/7).

Located roughly 60 km south of Narva, this crossing sees far less traffic and is a solid alternative on busy days.

Luhamaa – Shumilkino (southern Estonia)

Open: 07:00 – 19:00.

Change effective: 24 February 2026 (previously 24/7).

IMPORTANT: QUEUES ONLY ON THE WAY INTO RUSSIA

This is worth knowing before you travel.

Queues form on the Estonian side only — that is, for travellers heading into Russia. In the opposite direction, from Ivangorod through Narva into Estonia, the crossing is smooth and straightforward. Everything in this article applies to those travelling from Europe into Russia.

WHAT TO KEEP IN MIND THIS SUMMER

Summer is always the most demanding season for border crossings. June, July and August bring a significant spike in travellers: children on school holidays, families on annual leave, people who haven't seen their relatives in months. All of this puts extra pressure on the crossing points.

With Narva's reduced hours in mind, we recommend:

  •  Crossing in the morning whenever possible.

  •  Building extra time into your journey in case of a queue.

  •  Considering the alternative route via Koidula–Kunintsina Gora if heavy traffic is expected at Narva.

Using our queue assistance service if needed — more on this below.

ARTSANTAXI: TRANSFER FROM TALLINN TO ST PETERSBURG

ArtsanTaxi is an Estonian transport company that has been running transfers between Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia for many years. Our Google rating of 5.0 based on over 100 reviews reflects a consistent commitment to quality and a personal approach to every client.

We know the border situation inside out and are here to make sure our passengers arrive comfortably and without unnecessary hassle.

 What our service includes:

  •  Pick-up at the airport, port or any address. Your driver will meet you wherever is most convenient, help with your luggage and take you directly to the border crossing.

  •  Two-sided border service. One driver brings you to the Estonian side of the crossing. On the Russian side — in Ivangorod or at Kunintsina Gora — a second driver is already waiting to take you straight to your destination.

  •  Door-to-door delivery. We don't drop you at the border. We take you all the way to your address — St Petersburg, Moscow, Pskov or anywhere else you need to be.

  •  Queue assistance. We can hold your place in the queue on your behalf. This is particularly valuable during the summer season when waits at Narva can be considerable. Ask about this when booking.

Alternative routes. If the queue at Narva is long, we will offer the Koidula–Kunintsina Gora crossing instead, where conditions are typically much calmer.

TWO ROUTES TO ST PETERSBURG — WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE?

Route 1. Via Narva–Ivangorod (main route)

Tallinn — Narva — Ivangorod — St Petersburg

The most direct route, following the E20 highway. Your driver picks you up in Tallinn and takes you to Narva. On the Russian side, in Ivangorod, a second driver is waiting to take you straight to your address in St Petersburg.

Advantages: shortest distance, straightforward motorway.

Worth noting: summer queues here can be significant. If needed, we can assist with holding your place in line.

Route 2. Via Koidula–Kunintsina Gora (alternative route)

Tallinn — Koidula — Kunintsina Gora — Pskov / St Petersburg / Moscow

The Koidula crossing sits roughly 60 km south of Narva. On busy days it is noticeably calmer. After crossing, our driver meets you on the Russian side and takes you to your destination — Pskov, St Petersburg, Moscow or beyond.

Pskov also has train connections to St Petersburg, making this a convenient option if you prefer to finish the journey by rail.

Advantages: shorter queues, ideal for those travelling via Pskov.

Minor drawback: the overall route is slightly longer than via Narva.
