Moscow to Riga transfer via Pskov and Koidula
This page describes the route from Moscow to Riga through the Kunichina Gora - Koidula border checkpoint. People choose it when walking a long way with their bags is hard for them: the part you cross on foot here is about 350 metres. Below we go through the whole day on the road in order, from leaving Moscow to arriving at your address in Riga.
Your day on the road: from Moscow to Riga
Moscow
The driver arrives at the time you set: at your home, your hotel, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, Domodedovo or a railway station. You decide when to leave. Our only advice is to plan the trip so that you are at the border 3-4 hours before 19:00, when the crossing closes.
The M-11 motorway and Veliky Novgorod
The first part of the trip follows the M-11 Neva toll motorway. Near Veliky Novgorod the driver turns towards Shimsk and on to Pskov. Petrol stations along the road are good places for lunch, a coffee or simply a break whenever you like.
Pskov and Pechory
From Pskov to the crossing it is 60 km, about 50 minutes. Right before the border the road passes through Pechory. This is where the Pskov-Pechersky Monastery stands, active since the 15th century and one of the best known in Russia. Ask the driver and he will stop so you can see it.
The Kunichina Gora - Koidula border
About 7-8 hours and 755 km after Moscow you reach the border. The driver drops you off right at the checkpoint, and you go through the checks on foot, usually in 30 minutes to an hour. It is about 350 metres to the Estonian checkpoint.
Estonia, Latvia and Riga
At the Koidula exit our car with Estonian or Latvian plates meets you. Ahead are about 260 km and around 3 hours 30 minutes to Riga. You are taken to the door of your address or to Riga Airport. Over the whole day that makes about 1015 km and 11-12.5 hours of travel.
Who we recommend the Koidula route to
Elderly passengers and anyone who finds long walks difficult. Families with small children. Travellers with several suitcases. And those who have already travelled via Koidula and are used to this crossing: many of our clients come back to it.
Koidula or Luhamaa: which to choose for a trip to Riga
Both crossings are in the south and both work for a trip from Moscow. The difference is in the details. Via Luhamaa the road to Riga is about 990 km, the walk is about 900 metres, and on the Estonian side there is a terminal with a cafe, currency exchange and a shower. Via Koidula it is about 1015 km, but you only walk about 350 metres. Our drivers are at both crossings almost every day and will tell you which is calmer on the day of your trip. The other option is described on the page Moscow - Riga transfer via Pskov and Luhamaa.
What to know about the Koidula crossing
The crossing is open from 7:00 to 19:00 and lies far from big towns, so there are usually not many people.
There are hardly any facilities right at the border: only a petrol station on the Russian side and one cafe on the Estonian side. It is better to eat beforehand, for example in Pskov or on the motorway.
Veterinary control works on both sides. You can bring a dog or a cat, just let the manager know.
If the checks take longer, do not worry: the driver in Estonia will wait as long as needed and will not charge for waiting. You will know who meets you and in which car before you set off.
Flying out of Riga Airport
If you have a flight after the trip, tell the manager the flight time. You need to be at the airport 2 hours before departure, and he will work out when to leave Moscow. The price to Riga Airport is the same as to an address in the city. For the way back from Riga to Moscow, see the page Riga ↔ Moscow transfer.
