Estonia's First High-Rise
Hotel Viru opened on 14 June 1972 as the first high-rise building in Estonia. It was built by Finnish companies to host foreign visitors in Soviet-era Tallinn.

The KGB Museum on the 23rd Floor
In Soviet times, the top floor of the hotel, the 23rd, housed a KGB listening post. Hidden equipment was installed in 60 of the rooms, and even some of the restaurant tables were bugged.
The KGB left the hotel shortly before Estonia regained its independence in August 1991, but the secret rooms were only discovered in 1994. Today they house the Hotel Viru and KGB Museum, which can only be visited on a guided tour booked in advance.
