A Merchant's House with Centuries of History
Holy Spirit Street takes its name from the Church of the Holy Spirit at its far end. In the Middle Ages, it was lined with warehouses and merchants' homes, and it formed the route from the market square down to the harbour.
One of the first known owners of the warehouses on the hotel's site was a Tallinn alderman. Later, the buildings belonged to some of the city's most distinguished patrician families. During the siege of Tallinn in 1710, plague swept through the city and the houses on this street stood empty for many years. The medieval walls survived, and during restoration the hotel carefully preserved the vaulted ceilings, massive timber beams and stone doorways.
A Five-Star Boutique Hotel
Schlössle Hotel opened in 2002. Today it is a five-star boutique hotel with 23 rooms and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The rooms are decorated with antique tapestries and furniture, and no two are alike.
The Stenhus restaurant, with its open fires, serves Estonian cuisine with a modern twist. The cellars hold a cognac and cigar room, and the hotel has its own sauna in the historic basement. Plaques on the staircase honour famous guests, including the then Prince Charles. And Room 19 comes with a local legend about a resident ghost.
