Keila-Joa Waterfall, Castle and Laulasmaa: Private Tour from Tallinn

Just west of Tallinn lies one of the most beautiful corners of North Estonia: Keila-Joa waterfall, a Neo-Gothic castle in an old manor park and the quiet seaside village of Laulasmaa among pine trees.

Our Keila-Joa waterfall tour turns this route into a relaxed day trip with your own private driver. No timetables and no waiting at bus stops, just the places you want to see, at your own pace and in any season.

Your Tallinn to Laulasmaa Day Trip at a Glance

Route: Tallinn, Keila-Joa waterfall, Keila-Joa castle and park, Laulasmaa coast and the Arvo Pärt Centre, return to Tallinn.

Laulasmaa is about a 40 minute drive from Tallinn, and Keila-Joa lies right next to it. The tour runs all year round.

Keila Waterfall and the Suspension Bridges

Keila waterfall is about 6 metres high and tens of metres wide. The water falls over a horseshoe-shaped limestone terrace about a kilometre before the river reaches the sea.

From the park a path follows the riverbed and crosses two suspension bridges to the waterfall. The 3 km nature trail is easy to walk and suitable for prams and wheelchairs.

After sunset the waterfall is lit up until midnight. The lighting is switched off from 16 May to 31 July, during the bat breeding season.

Keila-Joa Castle, Schloss Fall

Above the waterfall stands Keila-Joa Manor, known as Schloss Fall. It was built in 1831 to 1833 for Count Alexander von Benckendorff and designed by the St Petersburg architect Andrei Stackenschneider. It is one of the earliest Neo-Gothic buildings in Estonia.

In the 19th century the castle welcomed the Russian imperial family, the singer Henriette Sontag and the composer Alexei Lvov, who first performed the Russian imperial anthem for Tsar Nicholas I here.

From 1927 to 1940 the manor was used by the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in Soviet times by the army. Today the renovated castle houses the Schloss Fall museum with guided tours and a restaurant. The museum is open all year, Thursday to Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00.

Laulasmaa: Pine Forest, Sea and the Arvo Pärt Centre

Laulasmaa is a seaside village named after the singing sands of its beach. It has been a holiday destination since the 1930s.

At Treppoja cascade the water runs down limestone steps for more than a hundred metres. You can watch it safely from a footbridge, and in winter the steps turn into an icy landscape.

The Arvo Pärt Centre stands in a pine forest by the sea. The building, designed by the Spanish architects Nieto Sobejano, opened in 2018. It houses the personal archive of the world famous composer, a 150 seat concert hall, a library and an exhibition space.

If you want to relax after the walks, you can also stop at the Laulasmaa spa LaSpa or have lunch at the restaurant of Keila-Joa castle.
