Narva Hermann Castle
Narva Castle, known as Hermann Castle, is the main historical and architectural landmark of eastern Estonia. Its history begins in the 13th century, when the Danes built the first wooden fortifications on the high bank of the river. They were soon replaced by stone walls and towers, and the castle became a residence of the Livonian Order. Over the centuries the fortress survived many sieges, including during the Great Northern War.
Today the castle is part of the Narva Museum. Its halls house exhibitions on the history of the city from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The East Wing and the Tall Hermann tower with its viewing platform, overlooking Narva and Russian Ivangorod, are open to visitors. The Northern Yard has craft workshops where you can see blacksmithing, pottery and weaving, and in summer it hosts historical festivals and fairs. The castle is open all year round, and a visit usually takes 1.5-2 hours. Please check current opening hours and ticket prices on the Narva Museum website.
The driver takes you right to the castle gates, waits as long as needed and then drives you to the next sight or back to Tallinn.
Narva River Promenade
The river promenade, about a kilometer long, runs through the historic center between the Narva River and the walls of the bastions and the castle. In the north it connects to the port, and in the south it leads to the Joaorg recreation area. The promenade has several zones: the Swedish Terrace with lion sculptures, the Dahlberg Stage for concerts and street performances, and Sun Square with a summer cafe, a fountain and a sundial. In summer it hosts festivals, fairs and workshops.

From the promenade you can see Ivangorod, the Russian town on the opposite bank of the river. Its main sight is the fortress founded in 1492. Together with Narva Castle it forms a unique ensemble: two fortresses facing each other on either side of the border.
The Dark Garden
The Dark Garden is one of the quietest and most atmospheric corners of Narva. The park lies on the high riverbank next to the bastions of the old fortress and got its name from the dense trees that give shade even on sunny days. Fortifications once guarded the approaches to the castle here, and today there are alleys, benches and viewpoints overlooking the river and the Ivangorod fortress. The garden is open all year round, day and night, and admission is free.
Narva Town Hall
The Town Hall with its tall tower and clock is considered a symbol of old Narva. It was built in the 17th century, when the city was under Swedish rule and flourishing, and served as the center of city government. During the Second World War Narva was almost completely destroyed, the Town Hall was badly damaged and later restored. Town Hall Square is a picturesque place for a walk and photos, and in summer it hosts fairs and festivals.
