Tallinn Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Opening Hours, Food and How to Get There

Tallinn Christmas Market is one of the most famous in Europe. In 2019 it was named the Best Christmas Market in Europe, and in 2026 it opens for the 26th time.

Here is everything you need to plan your visit: dates, opening hours, what to buy and eat, and how to get from the airport or port to your hotel.

Tallinn Christmas Market 2026 Dates and Opening Hours

The market is open from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, every day from 10:00 to 20:00.

Hot drinks are served until 22:00, and until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Where the Market Is

The market takes place on Town Hall Square in the heart of the medieval Old Town. The wooden huts stand around the main Christmas tree of the city.

Tallinn calls this tree the first public Christmas tree in the world. According to local tradition, the first tree stood on Town Hall Square in 1441.

What to Buy

Local artists and craftspeople sell candles of unusual shapes, modern decorations, sweaters, hats, mittens and wooden ornaments.

You will also find socks made from dog and alpaca wool and Estonian design pieces. These make good gifts to take home.

What to Eat and Drink

The market says it offers the widest choice of glögi in Europe. Dozens of varieties are served, with and without alcohol, including cranberry cherry and pumpkin glögi.

Traditional Estonian Christmas food includes sauerkraut, blood sausages and Christmas roasts. For something special, try elk sausage, lamb chops or duck confit.

At the Sweet House you can buy cinnamon and cardamom buns and decorated gingerbread.

Cups and plates are reusable with a 2 EUR deposit, which you get back when you return them.

For Families with Children

From 29 November, Santa's house is open every day from 12:00 to 18:00. Children who recite a Christmas verse receive a sweet treat.

Classic carousels are set up for the youngest visitors. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays there are concerts and folk dance performances on the stage.

Special Days in 2026

20 November: the market opens at 18:00 and the Christmas tree lights are switched on.

29 November: the first Sunday of Advent, when the first Advent candle is lit.

31 December: New Year celebrations at the market.

6 January 2027: the last day of the market, on Epiphany.

What Else to See Nearby

On Town Hall Square you will find the Town Hall Pharmacy. Dating back to 1422, it is the oldest continually operating pharmacy in Europe, and you can look inside for free.

A short walk away, the Niguliste Museum in a 13th century church has a Christmas programme and a viewing platform. In winter there is also an ice rink in the Old Town.

Another Christmas market is held at Balti Jaam Market from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.

Getting to Your Hotel in Winter: Tallinn Airport and Port Transfers

Tallinn in December is magical, but winter brings snow, icy pavements and early darkness. After a flight or a ferry, the last thing you want is to stand at a bus stop in the cold with your suitcases.

Cobblestone streets in the Old Town are slippery in winter, and pulling luggage over them in a snowfall is hard work. A private transfer takes this stress away from the very first minute of your trip.
